Which Bike?

Need help with sizing?

Please be aware that this is only a guide - the best way of finding out your size is to sit on a few bikes and get some advice from a suitably trained member of staff.  There is no standard size, and each of the types of bikes vary in how they are sized (see below).

Children's Bikes:

When choosing a child's bike we refer to the wheel size and not the frame size.  Please see the chart below for guidance.  If your child's size is above or below average then please telephone us on 01332 368849 for further advice.

12" wheel - ages 2.5 to 5 yr

14" wheel - ages 3.5 to 5.5 yr

16" wheel - ages 5 to 7 yr

18" wheel - ages 5 to 8yr

20" wheel - ages 7 to 9 yr

24" wheel - ages 9 - 11 yr

 26" wheel - 12 yr +

Mountain Bikes

There are two thoughts on mountain bike sizing; one is if the bike is never ridden off-road then you could possibly cope with a slightly larger frame than if you were going to be using the bike off-road. A good rule of thumb is that when straddling the cross-bar you should have at least 2" - 3" clearance between the top tube and your crotch, so that if you do have to jump off quickly you will be less likely to injure yourself and also a smaller frame is much more manoeuvrable off road than a larger frame. If you are not sure then please do call us for advice on 01332 368849

Road Bikes

A good rule of thumb with road bike sizing is that you should have at least 1" clearance between you and the cross bar when straddling the bike. Road bikes can be measured in a variety of ways centre of B/B to Top or centre to centre of Top Tube or with the advent of compact geometry centre of B/B to top of a imaginary horizontal line from the top of the head tube? Don't worry we will help you work this one out.... It is also important to take into account the length of the top tube

Hybrid bikes

Hybrid bikes are available in either 26" wheels or 700c wheels - please follow the guide for road bikes for 700c wheels and the mountain bike guide for 26" wheels.

The 700c bikes are sold to people who are after a fast commuter bike whereas the 26" bikes are mainly sold for the leisure market who are looking for something more comfortable
